Happy Spring! April flowers bring May Mosaics…? Is that how it goes?! Yes; I think it is!; I’ve scheduled and set up online registration for Outdoor/Garden Mosaics and Beginner’s Mosaics for May! Outdoor/Garden teaches the correct bases/substrates, adhesives, tesserae (materials), grout, and sealers to be used in outdoor mosaic pieces. Come and learn and make a mosaic garden stake, flower pot, stepping stone, small table, or other suitable item during this fun class!  More information and registration for this Wednesday nights class (May 2 and 9th, 5:30-8:30 pm) can be found on the Outdoor/Garden Mosaics Class page!

Speaking of other May events; Sunday, May 13 is Mother’s Day; how about giving Mom a gift certificate to take Beginner’s Mosaics that day and the next Sunday, May 20th? Or, come with her for an even bigger treat for Mom!  Class runs the two sessions; 1:00-4:30 pm; that way she and you don’t miss out on Mother’s Day breakfast or dinner!  I’ve had lots of Mother/Daughter combos take mosaics together, and they’ve really loved it! I’m VERY excited to share the news that TileMosaicGirl will be moving into its very own space (small but mighty!) by the end of this month (March, 2012)! The new space will house classes, the Mosaic Supply Shop, and Open Studio Time! We will be able to offer a wider range of days and times for classes, the Shop, and Open Studio, which will also enable us to host Visiting Instructor mosaic artists!  The new location is only about 2 miles North on Colorado Blvd., just off Colorado on Kentucky at Birch.  It has Home Depot/Whole Foods to the North and the Glendale Infinity Park to the East.  The shop is located in a wonderful multi-use building called “The Workshops”, and I will be on the 2nd floor, which is the “Arts & Crafts floor”.  The new address (click for map and photo link) is:

It is located in a great little revitalized neighborhood, but when they built the building in 1997, they installed Intercoms for entrance to the elevator, so you will need to buzz the unit # to be let in.  There is plenty of free, lighted parking, wonderful fellow tenants, and many other amenities.  More details and photos to come soon!

I’ve been extremely neglectful in sharing this, with all the craziness of the last few months, but, great news; I’ve been accepted as a Member Artist at a wonderful gallery in Denver’s Santa Fe Arts District, the CHAC Gallery.  CHAC, the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, is a 33 year-old non-profit arts organization that works with the community to promote Chicano/Latino art for both children and adults.  CHAC  features the art and culture of the vibrant Chicano/Latino community of Denver and the surrounding areas through its programming, two Santa Fe Drive art galleries, and community programs.  Popular annual events include the Members Season Opener in January, Santos & Crosses in August, Chile Harvest Arts Festival also in August,  El Dia De Los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”)  in November, and Our Lady of Guadalupe & Christmas Mercado in December.  I am honored and excited to be a part of this valuable organization, learn more about the art and the community, and have a chance to share my take on Mexican and Latino art and folk art.

I’d love for you to come on down and check out my latest (and LARGEST!) collection of art on exhibit at the CHAC Norte (North) Gallery through the end of February! I have a whole wall and displays of my work, including several wall hangings, some tables, gift items, and jewelry! This includes my piece above, “Reach of the Sacred Heart”, the first piece I have made with the wonderful Royal Mosa tile I acquired for my shop after training with Flair Robinson, the Telluride artist who beautifully uses this tile in many of her pieces.  Tons of amazing bright colors, creative bits of materials, and lots of Latin flair!

The Gallery will also be full with lots of other fellow artists, who have wonderful, fabulous work; Rob & Tammy Yancey in the front room, Crystal O’Brien, Joe Martinez, & Ellen Pruitt in the large back room with me, and special areas featuring the amazing work of Stevon Lucero, Suzanne Martino, Michael Penny, and Robert Martinez. Next-door, the Main CHAC Gallery features two Pueblo artists this month: Maria Lopez and Anthony Armijo, with beautiful small and large scale works that will take your breath away! Online registration is now available for February 2012 for both  Tempered “Crash” Glass Mosaics and Mosaic Jewelry classes.  For complete information and/or to register, click here for Tempered Glass class and here for Mosaic Jewelry class.  Class sizes are kept deliberately small so each student has enough attention; registrations are taken on a first come, first serve basis.  Online registration is completely secure through EventBrite and PayPal. You don’t need a PayPal account or even a credit card to register online this way.

Most of you know about my love of Mexican art and culture, including their holidays and traditions. Great news!  After numerous requests, I’m finally able this year to offer short, quick “Make a Mosaic Holiday Gift” Workshops!  Thanks to so many of my students who completed the survey on dates and projects for these workshops! There will be (3) offered between now and Christmas; Sunday, November 4 (Serving Trays), Saturday, November 26 (Mosaic Jewelry), and Sunday, December 4 (House Number / Name Plaques).  This is an opportunity to knock out a mosaic in one session, creating a truly unique, made-by-you gift!  The Serving Trays and House Number/Name Plaque workshops will be held at my studio at Pot-Luck, the Pottery Painting Place, while the Mosaic Jewelry workshop will be held at 910Arts in the Santa Fe Drive Arts District, to coincide with a statewide Mosaics exhibit hosted there from November 4-December 17 (more info. to follow).  For complete information on these workshops, see “Mosaic Classes” here.

New Softer, Thinner Ceramic Tiles from Europe!

The Mosaic Supply Shop will be OPEN tomorrow, Sunday, 10/23, from 3:00-4:00 pm and again from 8:15-8:45 pm.   (These hours are so funky b/c they’re before and at the end of a Beginner’s Mosaics class.) I have had to take a hard look at my workload and schedule and have decided that I will change Supply Shop and Open Studio hours for November/December to be By Request Only. This does not mean you have to meet a big minimum to have me come open things, just that I want to make sure that I’m only going when people really need me there and that I’m getting enough time to work on other things that need workin’ (like GLUIN’!)!  (This will include NOT being open this coming Wednesday, October 26, as I had posted; I’ve changed it now). Please just try to give me as much notice as you can (by phone, email, or Facebook) for when you want to come in to shop the Supply Shop and/or do Open Studio time, and I think we can make it work (minimum a day, the further ahead the better for me to be able to make it)!  Especially for you out-of-towners; make sure and let me know you’re coming; I want to make sure you can get what you want when you’re here!  I’ll make sure, too, to add time before each upcoming class to have it open, so that’ll be posted well ahead of time. And, if there are enough students in the upcoming “Make a Holiday Mosaic Gift” workshops that want an Open Studio time shortly thereafter to finish up their pieces more, we can make that happen.

I want to share exciting news about Supply Shop items…I have MANY new millefiori patterns and sizes and colors that I have never had before; they’re really cool! And, super exciting, is the new, beautiful, bright-colored ceramic tile I’ve gotten in from Europe; they’re thinner and softer than the ones here and they cut and shape amazingly easy!!! For those of you (like me) that have always wanted to do more w/ ceramic tile in mosaics, these babies are the answer!  (See artist Flair Robinson on Facebook or Flickr to see examples of the amazing pieces she creates with these tiles!)  They come in 6×6″ tiles only, but an amazing array of colors. And, I’ve got sampleboards w/ all the colors, so if there’s something you want that I don’t have, we’ll just add it to the next order and get it in! Lastly, I still have a fair amount of the wonderful Van Gogh and mirror glass tiles, diamonds and super thin “toothpicks” that everyone seems to love and lots of glass gems in different colors, shapes and sizes that I’ve marked down to $1.00 per 1 pound!!

Please let me know if you see any difficulties in these plans as far as your needs for mosaics and holiday gifts and we’ll go from there.
